Friday, 26th February 2016 – In a first for the VR and music industry, Samsung is collaborating with four-time BRIT Award nominees, Years & Years, to give music fans across Europe a truly unique, live and interactive Virtual Reality preview of their hotly-anticipated 21 date European tour.
Viewers will see the band perform four tracks from their platinum-selling album, Communion, at a bespoke gig that has been specifically designed for a live VR experience. The select audience at the performance will watch the gig live through a Samsung Gear VR headset, powered by the brand new Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. In addition, existing Gear VR customers across Europe can immerse themselves in the performance courtesy of a live VR broadcast.
Curated for VR with the help of director Sam Wrench, who has previously worked with acts including Blur, George Michael and Mary J. Blige, the special preview performance will allow fans to personalise their gig experience, by switching between three different camera angles on their Samsung Gear VR headset, all while the action unfolds live. From prime position on the front row, to on-stage with the band or even floating above the action taking place on the 360 degree stage below, fans will be able to immerse themselves in the band’s performance like never before.
Commenting on the forthcoming gig, Years & Years said: “We love working with new technology to explore ways to create new experiences for our fans. Working closely with Samsung, we’ve been able to explore a new dimension in VR experiences to craft something really special. It is really important to us to not only push the boundaries of our own sound, but also the way our fans can experience it – so we hope everyone who tunes in enjoys it.”
The creative collaboration between Samsung and Years & Years, with the support of Universal Music Group, illustrates the potential of VR both to transform the art of the live performance and the audience’s experience of it. The Gear VR, powered by the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, is helping to redefine what’s possible for music artists and fans alike, by creating an unprecedented bespoke VR experience.
David Lowes, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung Electronics Europe: “The smartphone is already such an integral part of our life but increasingly, it’s also going to be the gateway to amazing new one-of-a-kind experiences. That’s why we have teamed up with Years & Years, who share our passion for innovation and progress, and we’re looking forward to taking their live performance experience to a whole new level via the Gear VR.”
Years & Years has a strong track record of pushing boundaries in music. Last summer, their new single, Shine, was featured as part of the first interactive ad-break, which viewers controlled via Twitter.
Jack Melhuish, Marketing Director at Polydor Records said: “This partnership has been another exciting step into the future of live music experiences. Working with great technology from Samsung, an innovative director and band, we have been able to take a standard live VR stream and turn it into a truly unique viewing experience for music fans across Europe. Years & Years is a special band and this partnership has made it possible to do something incredible to mark the start of their European tour.”
